Can Inverted Decompression Help Optimize Workouts and Prevent Injury?
Study Evaluates Spinal Loading During Circuit Weight Training and Running

A group of researchers out of Liverpool noted that the vertebral column may be subjected to loading by gravity, changes in motion, muscle activity, and external forces, all factors that can be involved during exercise. When discs are subjected to a compressive load, water is exuded through the disc wall and this results in loss of disc height and loss of stature. They surmised that the magnitude of spinal shrinkage would therefore reflect the degree of loading induced.

"Some form of reversing this prior shrinkage may be advisable before
such exercise regimes are performed in the evening..."
Leatt, Reilly and Troup, Spinal Loading During Circuit Weight-Training and Running

For their study, they looked at two fitness activities that load the spine: weight-training and running. The results showed that these activities did cause reductions in height. While height change is normal throughout the day, the height loss experienced exceeded normal range by 18%!

The researchers noted that the spine may be more vulnerable to injury from loading in the evening when it has already lost appreciable disc height (a normal effect of daily stature change). They went on to say that "Some form of reversing this prior shrinkage may be advisable before such exercise regimes are performed in the evening. These could include adopting the Fowler posture... or the use of gravity inversion for unloading the spine."

Summary:
  • When discs are loaded, they lose moisture.
  • Lost moisture = lost height.
  • Height loss is normal throughout the day, but...
  • ...weight training and running causes greater loss of height due to increased loads.
  • The spine may be more vulnerable to injury in the evening when it has already lost height.
  • Gravity inversion is advised to help reverse prior shrinkage before exercise.

Provide Your Members with the Tools They Need to Maintain the Health of Their Spine and Joints

Gravity-assisted decompression, or inversion, is the only practical way to reverse the load on the joints. Your members will love being able to invert securely and comfortably with the Power VI:
  • Invert pre-exercise to prepare for the workout ahead
  • Invert post-exercise to help decrease recovery time and muscle soreness
